Recreational Leadership
Career Studies Certificate
Purpose
Wilderness recreation is experiencing strong growth in western Virginia where over 60 percent of the total land area is forested. In the DSLCC service area outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant in both private and public agencies. From the expansive borders of the Blue Ridge Parkway to the thousands of acres of State Parks and including nationally renowned private resorts such as Homestead, Wintergreen, Massanutten and Bryces Mountain, full time recreation opportunities are readily available. These organizations need technicians trained in outdoor leadership with skills in canoeing, back-backing, skiing, mountain biking, fly-fishing, rock climbing and many other disciplines.
The Recreational Leadership Career Studies Program is designed to prepare students in two categories. The first is for entry level jobs in the field of Recreational Leadership in both private and public agencies and the second is to provide an opportunity for those already employed in the field an opportunity to improve and upgrade their skills.
Completion of this curriculum leads to a Career Studies certificate in Recreational Leadership, or it can be combined with Hospitality Services Certificate foundation courses as one of the Hospitality Services specialization options.
Admission Requirements
Students must meet the general admission requirements of the College.
