Nursing and Health Care

Quality Program

The Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (DSLCC) nursing program, long respected in the health care field, consistently graduates superior nurses. These graduates have often achieved a 100 percent passing rate on the first testing of the state licensure exam. In fact, the Virginia Board of Nursing reported that the 2007 passing rate was 100 percent for graduates of the DSLCC nursing program as first-time candidates taking the NCLEX-PN.  DSLCC offers a number of nursing and health care related programs.

Nursing Level I: Licensed Practical Nursing
The LPN to RN Ladder Program

The three semester program leading to a Practical Nursing Certificate is designed to prepare students to deliver safe and competent nursing care to patients with usual or expected outcomes. Practical nurses work under the supervision of practitioners with higher degrees in acute and non-acute care settings.

After successful completion of Level I, students will be eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination leading to licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Students may also choose to continue into Level II of the program and earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree and be eligible to take the National Council Licensing Examination leading to licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN). Employment opportunities for the LPN include staff positions with hospitals, physicians' offices and nursing homes.

Nursing Level II:
Associate in Applied Science in Nursing Degree

This portion of the LPN to RN ladder program is designed for students who have already earned a Practical Nursing Certificate and who wish to continue their education for an additional two semesters to earn an Associate in Applied Science Degree.

Early application is suggested since space is limited. Applications for the new class beginning in the Fall semester may be made to the nursing department beginning in November of the preceding year. Employment opportunities for the RN include staff positions with hospitals, nursing homes, physicians' offices, community agencies, schools, industry and home health care providers.

RN Bridge Program for LPNs

The LPN to RN Bridge program is designed for students who have earned LPN status prior to attending the DSLCC nursing program.
